Here are some first aid tips for common emergency dental services:

Broken tooth:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Save any pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to the dentist.
  • See a dentist as soon as possible to assess the damage and determine the best course of treatment.

Cracked tooth:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • See a dentist as soon as possible to assess the damage and determine the best course of treatment.
  • Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with the cracked tooth to prevent further damage.

Jaw possibly broken:

  • Apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Keep your head elevated to help reduce swelling.
  • Seek emergency medical attention immediately.
  • Do not try to move your jaw or speak until you receive medical attention.

Knocked-out tooth:

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (top part) and rinse it gently with water.
  • Try to reinsert the tooth back into its socket, if possible.
  • If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a container of milk or your saliva to keep it moist.
  • Seek emergency dental treatment within 30 minutes to increase the chances of saving the tooth.

Objects caught between teeth:

  • Try to remove the object using dental floss or a dental pick.
  • Do not use sharp objects to try to remove the object, as this can cause further damage to your teeth and gums.
  • If you are unable to remove the object, see a dentist as soon as possible.

Toothache:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, as directed.
  • See a dentist as soon as possible to determine the cause of the toothache and the best course of treatment.
